The evening will kick off with a lecture by Professor Caitlin Casey as she explores how the groundbreaking discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope are transforming our understanding of the universe’s earliest galaxies, black holes, and the cosmic dawn that followed the Big Bang.
The lecture will be followed by behind-the-scenes lab tours led by Professor Ben Mazin and Professor Max Miller-Blanchaer and a reception to connect with faculty, students, and alumni. The event will end after dusk with stargazing!

Caitlin Casey is an observational astronomer and professor of physics at the UC Santa Barbara. Before joining UC Santa Barbara in 2025, she was an astronomy professor at the University of Texas at Austin since 2015, and previously both a NASA Hubble postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hawai’i and McCue Fellow of Cosmology at the University of California, Irvine.

Casey received her Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Cambridge in 2010, funded as a Gates Cambridge Scholar by the Gates Foundation. Casey leads one of the largest observational projects on JWST called COSMOS-Web, which is a deep field about 200 times larger than the Hubble Deep Field.
