From the Archives
We are proud to present our fall 2023 From the Archives newsletter, featuring exciting updates, news and acquisitions in the UC Santa Barbara Library’s Special Research Collections (SRC). SRC is a treasure trove of rare and valuable historical items, personal archives, rare books, and audio-visual materials. These materials exist in SRC not only for the purposes of preservation, research, and teaching, but also because they tell the stories of our collective history. 
In this issue, we review new acquisitions to SRC, including the archives of notable faculty emeritus Dr. Waldo Tobler and an impressive collection of 78 records featuring the music of Agustin Barrios. Our collections are often featured in public events, including an exhibition about the cultural arts center and studio Self Help Graphics and an evening exploring the longevity of the disc in recorded sound.

Acquisition Spotlight
University Archives: Dr. Waldo Tobler
This fall, the Library acquired the academic archives of notable faculty emeritus Dr. Waldo R. Tobler (1930 - 2018) as part of our University Archives. The archives were donated by Tobler’s widow, Rachel Tobler, a longtime supporter of the Library who also created the Waldo Tobler Memorial Lecture Fund in Geography, Tobler’s home department. The Greg Scholl Collection of Agustin Barrios Mangoré Recordings in honor of John and Jody Arnhold
Greg Scholl never sought out to become a collector. In fact, as is the case for many accidental collectors, it all started with a curiosity about a subject that turned into a casual hobby and then morphed into a multi-decade long pursuit of collection completion. Now, due to Scholl’s generous donation to the Performing Arts Collection, the Library is the home of his nearly complete collection of 78 rpm sound recordings by guitarist Agustin Barrios. Cultura Cura: 50 Years of Self Help Graphics in East LA
Join us for an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles cultural arts center and studio Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG). Exhibition materials are drawn from the Library's California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, which includes an extensive collection of SHG studio silk screen prints, as well as organizational records, photographs, and ephemera. SHG was founded in the early 1970s, during the height of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, by artists Carlos Bueno, Antonio Ibanez, Frank Hernandez, and Sister Karen Boccalero: library.ucsb.edu/events-exhibitions/cultura-cura

The Redoubtable Disc Record – And Why the Format Refuses to Die

Despite the way the Internet connects us with vast quantities of music, 43% of all albums sold in the U.S. last year were vinyl LPs. Why is it that, today, the disc record is the only physical audio format with increasing sales? A panel of industry and audio experts explores the 130 year history of the disc record and explains why – despite frequent predictions of its demise – the format’s popularity continues to grow.

Santa Barbara Community Archives Project
The Santa Barbara Community Archives Project (SBCAP) is an initiative to document the rich and diverse communities that make up Santa Barbara. This summer, Library curators hosted an event on Santa Barbara’s Eastside to share family photographs and home videos gathered and digitized last fall during its inaugural outreach to preserve the community history of surrounding neighborhoods: news.ucsb.edu/santa-barbara-community-history

SRC on Film: “América Tropical: The Martyr Mural of Siqueiros”
Filmmaker and scholar Omar Foglio with the Dignicraft team accessed the Shifra Goldman papers (CEMA 119) in SRC to support their documentary film “América Tropical: The Martyr Mural of Siqueiros,” which had its broadcast premiere as an episode of ARTBOUND, produced by PBS SoCal and KCET PBS on Oct. 11. The documentary explores the revolutionary artistic methods and politics of the Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros during his time in Southern California. A screening will be hosted at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on Nov. 9: sbma.net/events/america-tropical-martyr-mural-siqueiros

The Papers of Dalip Singh Saund
Emmy-nominated filmmaker Mridu Chandra is developing "SAUND vs COCHRAN," a feature documentary about Dalip Singh Saund, the first-ever Asian American to serve in Congress. Chandra is conducting research in Saund's archives, which are part of CEMA and include ephemera, correspondence, photos and film: saundvscochran.com
